The Bilby [a rabbit eared Bandicoot] is an Australian native nocturnal
marsupial and is on the rare and endangered list. It has long
ears, soft blue grey fur and it burrows. The decline of many of
Australia's native species has been caused by rabbits, predators such
as foxes, feral cats, land clearing and the degradation of
habitats. People need to recognise the uniqueness of Australian
fauna and with continued conservation efforts, hopefully our fauna will
not become extinct. Perth Zoo [noctural house] have a Bilby
recovery program [breeding for release into previously inhabited areas]
and Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in West Australia has been
involved with the Calm Western Shield Wildlife Recovery Program and
been breeding bilbies since 1996. Kanyana's first baby bilby was
born at Easter 1997. Kanyana is a self-funded, non-profit
organisation and with volunteer help, provide a temporary home to many
different native species, rehabilitate them and then release them back
into the wild. Some help for this program came from Coles Save
the Bilby Fund [every Easter, for each chocolate Bush Billy Bilby
purchased, 50c was donated] Everyone can help - join as a member
or adopt and animal.
